Orlando Bloom’s Watch Choices: IWC, Rolex, and Panerai
The Hollywood heartthrob ORLANDO BLOOM has just been chosen the new Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). And if he had to choose a wrist watch, what brand will he pick?
English actor, Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom is a Manchester United fan. Yet, he hasn’t been intrigued to wear the official Man U Timepiece. Bloom had rather chosen three different watch brands so far: IWC, ROLEX, and PANERAI; and that reveal him to be a man with excellent taste in timepieces.

Orlando Bloom is a watch collector especially ROLEX. He’s been in love with the brands for years. Back in the past, Bloom was taken shot for GQ magazine wearing a classic ROLEX WATCH. It was a vintage one. And recently in New York, the Lord of the Rings star auctioned his classic and vintage Rolex collections including a rare black PVD-coated steel chronograph - Rolex Milgauss, and a fine and rare black face Rolex 1969 Explorer. But the most favorite and drew more attention on the Antiquorum’s Important Collectors’ Wristwatches auction on June 11 was the fine and rare 1973 Explorer II “Steve McQueen” model, highly prized by Rolex aficionados, awarded to US$ 12,600. Bloom wore it on a leather cuff bracelet. As a UNICEF Ambassador, Orlando Bloom will donate part of the proceeds from the sale to the United Nations children’s charity.
Nicknamed after the American movie actor of the 1970s, The ROLEX 1973 EXPLORER II “STEVE McQUEEN” as worn by Orlando Bloom is considered one of the most fashionable vintage references of all time – the Reference 1655 Explorer II, also known as the “FRECCIONE”. This Rolex series is very popular in the horology collector world as it happens to be extremely rare. Interestingly, in real life Terrence Steven “Steve” McQueen himself never really wore the Explorer II Ref. 1655, but the Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512 instead.
The first Rolex Explorer was created in 1953 with the 1953 ascent of Mount Everest in mind. The watch focused on the needs of mountaineers and other similar explorative pioneers. In 1971, the ROLEX EXPLORER II ref. 1655 was released and designed for cave explorers (speleologists). Therefore, the watch features a secondary large orange 24 hour hand which was intended to help the speleologist who may have lost his sense of time in the constant darkness. The extra hour hand will tell the explorer whether the main hour hand representing AM or PM. (Because of the orange arrow, this model received nickname “Freccioni”.)
Production of the Explorer II ref. 1655 was discontinued in 1985 to make it extremely valuable and highly collectible. Moreover, this watch is also the only Rolex model to ever use an extra hour hand in cool orange color.
ORLANDO BLOOM’S ROLEX “STEVE McQUEEN” WATCH was produced in 1973. It is characterized by a straight second hand and an orange 24 hour hand as the 1974 models onward incorporated a luminous circle on the second hand and the changing color from orange to red of the 24 hour hand.
The stainless steel case measures 38 mm in diameter and 14 mm thick. The bezel has an engraved and brush finished 24 hour scale with black numbers. The movement, a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer is animated by the 26 jewel automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570. This model also includes sapphire crystal with magnifier for the date, crown protector, mechanical movement with rhodium-plated, automatic winding caliber 1570, and 26 jewels. Orlando Bloom may have worn the Rolex Explorer II on a leather cuff bracelet, but the original design is a metal bracelet with flick lock clasp.
